I follow a bunch of rad feminist tumblrs, so forgive me if this topic is tapped, but here you go: one thing that’s very interesting to me as of late is the sort of performative femininity pushed in pop-culture. I think that gulf between the “ideal lady” and the awkwardness of trying to be…
It’s funny how pop culture latched onto Joan—maybe because...

Sometimes I really think I’m addicted to a game on my phone then after two days I start to hate it but can’t delete it because I spent 99 cents on it. I am very cheap.
Record post coming later even though I bought boring shit like Blue by Joni Mitchell, which I have never owned.

OK I am listening to my favorite songs of 2011 mix and I wish there was a version of “With Ur Love” by Cher Lloyd that does not contain Mike Posner. He is the worst.

My Favorite Records of 2011
I am not a music critic and I work for the state so it’s not like I have a ton of money for records. My year end lists are mostly to satiate my own need to archive my year to year tastes. These are my favorite records from 2011 right now. I can’t say these are in any order except maybe #1.
1. Veronica Falls- s/t
2. Frank Ocean- Nostalgia, Ultra
3. Widowspeak- s/t
4. Beyonce-...

X Factor UK on the Hairpin →
Since US X Factor pisses me off so much (Cheryl is a perfectly wonderful judge), I have begun season 8 of X Factor UK, already having enjoyed season 7. I remembered reading this article a week ago and I went back and read the comments and now that I know there is a show called The Great British Bake Off, I will torrent every episode and not leave my house.
ITV and the regular BBC are far superior...

I have those last two already but not on LP. I like to double buy things. I guess I already have the June Brides stuff too but that was too cool to pass up.
Have a lot to catch up on, record-wise, and I hope to write it all down and post this week.

What makes “Rolling in the Deep” so transfixing? It is that the background singers sound like Carly Simon? Is it that there are background singers at all? Is it that those first few addictive notes of the verse sound like “Trouble So Hard”? Is it that it was co-written by that prolific bastard
I had this friend in college that used to say he loved songs that “walked to the...

We all have questionable taste
So this article led me to rediscover my R.E.M. collection, which eventually led me to download the 10,000 Maniacs discography.
Aside from R.E.M., they were my first “favorite band.” I bought the CD singles with extra tracks, traded bootlegs and wore my Our Time in Eden shirt regularly. Somewhere I discovered Pavement and Superchunk and kind of forgot about good old Natalie Merchant,...

I like it better than Tumblr for found images because it links back to where you got the image, so you always remember the source and you can refer back to it.
Currently collecting house inspiration (move in day is less than 4 weeks away!) as well as yummy desserts and pastries I want to make.

I have no idea what The Girls sound like (they’re likely better than Girls), but it’s on Hozac so it’s probably fun rock and roll.
Sadly, I will have to cut back on record buying for a while as we have bought a house in Richmond’s north side! I am not sure...

MAINSTREAM THIS
I didn’t see the Grammys, as I was in DC watching Henry Rollins speak. But I wanted to say a few things:
1. If you think Justin Beiber should have won you are a total moron and/or are 14. No one is going to vote for...

The comments on this ladyblog post are hilarious.
So many people with nitpicky corrections! WHO FUCKING CARES?!
Not everyone has time to double check their posts when they’re sneaking Internet usage at work. Writers are one thing (it also seems like “bloggers” are replacing “writers” in the world but that’s another post), commenters are another.
